Stephanie Rice has a new tattoo and it's not a ship nor an anchor on her chest either!

The spot where she got it must have hurt like heck but what cracks me up is that she is posing in front of a Nickleodeon backdrop. "Hey kids, check out the new tat! I be so stylin.'"

National Nine News down under has the story and photos. [Link]

I was thinking of getting an Ironman "M" tattoo once but I feel there is a "statute of limitations" on that. When you are an Olympian, you are an Olympian for LIFE. When you are an Ironman, you are only an Ironman for that year! I think it is more healthy for one's psyche to think of it in those terms as well.

I don't know, Mike Reilly says "You ARE an Ironman!!" as you cross the line ... no disclaimers!

So few people are capable of becoming Olympians and the process is such a "gauntlet" that to make it is not just an honor but an example of how great someone is/was in terms of both ability and character.

I bet that more people do an Ironman in one year than there have been Olympic swimmers in the past 116-years of Olympic competition.

(I owe you a letter)

I don't know Tony. I'd accept someone sporting an Ironman tattoo with Kona 20XX underneath if the individual qualified normally and not through the lottery. It's something I'll never do.

Hmmm, your supposition seems workable. I guess the those who got in via the lottery or waiting list; (I got in on the waiting list not the lottery), those people get to wear temporary tattoos for one year only. ;-)

Tony, did I miss something? Are you doing an Ironman?

Tony Austin said...

Ex post facto, Charlie. I did one a long time ago in a galaxy far away.

It was so long ago that I raced against Dave Scott, Julie Moss, Mark Allen, Paula Newby Fraiser and other long and forgotten tri-dinosaurs.

Qualifying normally or lottery, if you've finished an Ironman you deserve the tattoo. It's not as if the next year all of a sudden you never did it.

A purely subjective opinion: I never quite got why Stephanie Rice is always described as beautiful. She's a healthy girl with a healthy attitude toward life, but those features always seemed pretty ordinary to me. Especially in an era where we have Coughlin, Manadou, and Beard. The latter two may no longer be at their swimming peaks, but they're still beauties.
