Theresa Alshammar sprinting - Note her head position!

It's official, great swimmers look up when sprinting. So far Cesar Cielo and Alexander Popov are the only swimmers I can find who look down when sprinting.

However fast they are swimming face down is hydrodynamically proven to lower drag. Blame the thousands of kilometers sharing a pool lane with others for the habit of looking forward (though in Alshammar's case she's only looking up at a 45 degree angle). It should make you respect the few who've overcome their instincts and mastered this incredibly difficult technique. Of course Alexander Popov would be one of them - in a coach's poll of the best freestyle technique ever he'd win hands down.

Looks like some kind of belt around her waist? Know what that's for..??

I don't know. It is to low for a heart rate monitor; Perhaps an Mp3 player or maybe a belt for some cord work?

this video is very old. i first found this video when i started swimming competitively in 2003? there is a similiar video of ian thorpe, wearing a belt and you can hear the camera moving. i think the belt is for video analysis, kinda like the racing stripe down the sides of drags suites (first worn by Doc's swimmers, to note body rotation.)
