USOC tells America's elite swimmers - we want you training in Orange County, California! - That's Disneyland for short!

Revealed in Swimming World:

So, you're an elite swimmer and the USOC gives you a choice to call home: Baltimore, Maryland; Charlotte, North Carolina; or in Orange County, California?

I suspect all the cool kids will be choosing California.

"... Sean Hutchison revealed that he would be heading to Fullerton, Calif., to open a United States Olympic Committee (USOC) Post-Graduate Center as part of the Fullerton Aquatics Sports Team (FAST).

Hutchison will not be taking over head coaching duties at FAST, as he will be focusing on coaching a high performance area of the team.

"When I was asked by Mark Schubert to go to Fullerton and run a USOC sponsored site, I was honored," Hutchison told Swimming World. "As difficult as it will be to not be on the ground at KING, it was something big enough for me to look ahead to. Fullerton will be a little different from Bob [Bowman] at North Baltimore and Dave [Marsh] at SwimMAC-Carolina. I am just coaching the elite swimmers, which will be my main focus."

Well, there was a movie once called "When Harry Met Sally." The theme was, is it possible for a man and woman to be best friends and nothing more.

The answer was no!

Soooo: Damn straight I think she is coming and her life is going to ROCK! It will rock for both of them.

They will be 5-miles from Disneyland, and an hour away from Los Angeles. She will be living in a place where she can surf in the morning, and ski that night.

Aquatic Sports are pretty serious here in SoCal.

Word is going to get out with the new Elite Center in Fullerton.

I remember when the news (1970s) was all about swimming in Mission Viejo.
Now Mark Shubert has directed media traffic to Fullerton.

Lets' hope the swimmers benefit the most. And that they get all the press they need to succeed as professional swimmers.

You know what, I smelling something pretty stinky about the deal.

I am looking into it now.

What's so fishy? Its a good location with the added benefit of job opportunities for those swimmers (and their significant others) who cant get by on a swimmer's salary.

Ive already heard that a lot of elite swimmers are looking to head on over.

I am worried about the funding, I am worried about Schubert choosing a place that is close to his house, I am worried about the potential for USA Swimming money to be used to compete against other schools rather than sharing the money with programs that are in trouble...

It is great for California and the swimmers, but is it ethical? I am still investigating...

I hope it is.

The current head coach at FAST in Fullerton is Bill Jewell. Bill was an assistant at USC under Schubert. Bill is excellent at stroke mechanic video analysis. If you go to the FAST website (http://www.fastswimming.net/Home.jsp?team=fast) it openly states that Bill has been working with Schubert to establish the training center. Yes it was a pre-existing relationship, but swimming is truly a small world, everyone knows each other. With the swimming history of SoCal it would be insane not establish something here. It offers another alternative to the likes of Mission Viejo, NOVA, Trojan, etc.
