I have been fascinated with this place ever since I was a kid. I saw it for the first time in a old Sinbad movie on TV and I was blown away. This ancient city was once overtaken by jungle, completely shrouded and hidden, what little left that was exposed to the world was summarily looted by western tomb raiders. That all changed when Cambodia took control of it as a national asset and restored it. Some of the artwork looted has been returned.
More evidence that swimming is not just an art or science but rather a lifestyle and has been for the past 1000 years.

Thank you for including one of my images in your very interesting website of unusual objects around the world. There is a second identical pool in another courtyard to the right of this pool. No one knows exactly what role these pools played in the daily life of the temple but they are very impressive when viewed up close.
The second pool next door gives it away! Clearly it's the warm up/warm down pool with the centered one hosting the actual races. Don't have the foggiest idea why people were stumbling around trying to decipher the obvious. Perhaps they don't have many pools where they come from.
