Speedsuit criminals will be escaping from Alcatraz this Saturday morning at 9:00 AM PST - pass it on!

Hundreds of "speedsuit criminals" wearing "plastic fantastic thingys" along with fifty-or-so fellow-travelers wearing just skin will escape from Alcatraz this Saturday morning at 9:00 AM PST.

The Alcatraz Sharkfest Swim put on by Envirosports commemorates John William Anglin, along with his brother Clarence and Frank Morris, who successfully escaped from Alcatraz on June 11th 1962.

Note: They were never heard from again!

Though I have done this race 5-times, I am taking it both seriously and cautiously. This is the hardest open water swim a person can ever do under 2 miles.

Awwww.... its' not that hard!
But I do appreciate the way they keep the legend of fierceness up after all these years!

The rest of us are going to lounge around the Naples Island swim this weekend so we can get a t-shirt with Rob's logo on it!
:)

Have fun in San Francisco Tony!

yay RobAquatics t-shirts! Well Naples Island Swim t-shirts with a little RobAquatics logo hidden on it somewhere, but still... :) I had to come up with a logo special for the swim hence that new banner that popped up on my site about a month ago.

I think Tony needs to put that wanted poster on a t-shirt, I'd buy one!

yeah it is. I can't think of a race under 2-miles that is harder. there are rescues every year.

Beautiful swim. I had a chance to do it last year after the San Fran Swim Across America. I'd love to do it again some day. Have a great day and watch out for SHARKS! ;)

Tony -
I think that open water swims are tackled by unprepared swimmers as well.

Pool workouts don't fully prepare swimmers for a cold, open water, current filled swim.

But I know you're going to be fine out there!

Text us when you get out of the sauna!!

Great poster! It went well for us Mainers today. Very much like swimming in the Atlantic back home, only with 800 crazy Californians. Wish I had got to meet you in person. So enjoy your blog. Thanks for your advice on the race!

I want to thank every one for the nice words. I am actually very overwhelmed!!!

I placed 114th out 655 athletes who wore wetsuits

Another 120 athletes swam without wetsuits but that does not count since I had a flotation advantage.

In the men's Wetsuit Division I placed 86th overall out of 455 male swimmers

In my age group I finished 13th out of 62

Two athletes were physically challenged and many others did not finish.

I, along with the bulk of the Alcatraz swimmers, were swept off course by 300-yards or so due to an aggressive high tide flow moving through the bay.

I had a very tough time. Most of us had to swim against a current for 300-yards and there was a lot of "bump" in the water. I have done six of these Sharkfest events now and each swim is like an entierely different race.

Most important, 5 people withdrew from the race as soon as they jumped off the boat. The cold water set their hearts racing and the usual ice cream headache that lasts for 5 minutes.

Anthony pulled out another 5 people, Scott rescued a non-wetsuit swimmer suffering early stages of hypothermia aas he swam in near circles.

You could count on one hand how many athletes went for a swim to warm up for the race. (Yes, I was one of them.)

Again, thank you! :-)
