And barely breathing hard at the end. Unbelievable.
She's pretty awesome, isn't she. Came out of seemingly nowhere to cut a world record by over two whole seconds in one meet. Since she didn't make the Olympic team when she should have, kudos to her to picking herself up and keeping on going.
I'd like to see her swimming the 400m IM or something else, too.
Some people have suggested that the textile suits might take more advantage away from certain swimmers though. Something about them being not as good for swimmers who benefit from compression. Dunno if that's true.
Don't forget, Stephanie Rice was right next to her wearing the same suit and lost.
But Stephanie Rice wasn't fully fit and well.. the Australian team reported that before the meet.
Stephanie Rice swam near or on her world record pace though
Rice improved on her previous record by something like a second, which I thought was very impressive, considering her condition. I wouldn't rule Stephanie Rice out. I think she has immense powers of motivation and can drive herself hard. Provided she can stay motivated and doesn't lose interest, like Jodie Henry did. Rice had some good fighting talk afterwards, so fingers crossed that Ariana Kukors has competition because it makes it more fun.
I'm a Kukors fan, but I think you're pushing it a bit about 2012. Her biggest problem will be even getting on the team in IM. We're more likely to see a top-level comeback from Katie Hoff than to see Ariana do a repeat of Rome. It ain't gonna happen.
She dropped Stephanie Rice like an age-grouper. I think Katie Hoff is a valid option is she gets the right coaching.
I see Hoff as somewhat like Leisel Jones in terms of demonstrating a capability to dominate, yet somehow always a bit disappointing at the highest level i.e. the Olympics. This could primarily be about a psychological edge.
Hoff worries me - I hope that what happened in Beijing hasn't killed something in her.
