He is probably the only US Swimmer in history who could even do that. Even Johnny Weissmuller had to become Tarzan before he could retire.
I would also like to add that with colleges cancelling swim programs, governing bodies doing what they can to keep swimming from becoming commercialized with suit products, he may be the last one to do so as well.

Well, at least he's trying to help other swimmers through Level Field Fund and his own Foundation. I suppose he'll continue to do that when he retires.
Don't get me wrong, I said nothing critical about Phelps in this post.
The post was more about the lack of opportunities for swimmers to do likewise.
I don't think it's an out-of-line assumption to just assume that any time you mention Phelps (or most people for that matter) you're being critical of them...
