Australian Swimming Championships: Ian Thorpe swims a 1:49.16 to make the semi-finals in the 200m-free!

He was "storming it" too till the last 50-meters. He just might make London...

From the Chicago Tribune:
"It's a pretty decent time. I'm happy with that swim this morning," the 29-year-old said in a brief poolside interview before heading off to prepare for the semi-finals (0912 GMT) in the evening session at the South Australia Aquatic and Leisure Centre in Adelaide.

Should Thorpe make Saturday evening's final but miss out on a berth for the individual event reserved for the winner and runner-up, a top-six finish will at least ensure he is considered for selection to the four-member freestyle relay team.

"Like Dara Torres, Nathan Adrian, Edwin Moses..." wait what?

Nathan Adrian?!

I suppose you mean Anthony Ervin, although the only American faster than him is Adrian right now.

OOOOPS! MY BAD!!!!!!! - My apologies. I rushed the comment when I was at work.

I did mean Anthony Ervin, the African American swimmer.

jaja.. no has admitido mi anterior mensaje, Tony. Lo escribiré en español a ver si ahora cuela: Thorpe es un gilipollas, sólo había que verlo en BCN03 negándose a hablar con los periodistas españoles. Es un imbécil y me alegro de su fracaso actual.

Hey Anon, su hijo de puta:Ian Thorpe has multiple Olympic Gold Medals, a bunch of World Records and about $10 million in the bank. What you got?

And, you moron, given less than a year of serious training, the dude popped a 50-point 100 and a 1:49 200. I'm betting you couldn't cover 25 meters in less than 2 minutes.

And only chicken-sh*ts post anonymously.

No name calling please unless it's towards Craig Lord, John Leonard or a public figure

A shame. I don't know where Thorpe's head is at not competing in Beijing and then not giving himself enough time to train for this. I think that if he's gay, he should come out as well. Closeting takes up a lot of energy and takes its toll.

So much for comment moderation.

Not sure what's with all the hating on Thorpe. It seems as random as the hyperbole from some of those rabid Cielo fans.

No worries for me, Tony. As my old Dad would say, by your actions, you are revealed.

You have to post something, though, about James Magnusson's swim: 47.10 is an absolute stunner!!

I don't know what is going on with the odd comments above. Thorpe always seemed like a decent guy who got burned out, quit too early and then came back too late.

I don't know if he could have made the Aussie team if he had given himself more time(its a very strong team in his events) but it might have helped. He is a 200/400 swimmer who stretched to swim the 100 in his prime. That makes it harder for him to come back as a 100/200 guy since he was never a drop dead sprinter. It will be interesting to see how well he swims next year if he sticks around like he says he might.

I suspect he will do better but not well enough to have made the Aussie Olympic team with his times. He would have been better off taking a couple years to swim half-assed, then picking it up from a stronger base like an American Olympian who we have discussed.
